Our Materials

We primarily use gold vermeil for our jewelry, with the exception of gold-filled pieces for things like thicker chains and earrings. This will always be stated on product descriptions.

Here is a break down of the types of gold jewelry you may be familiar with and why some are better than others:

What is the difference between Solid Gold, Gold Vermeil, and Gold Plating?
Gold Plated:
Gold Plating is a process where a thin layer (between 1/1000 to 3/1000) of gold is bonded to a base metal, usually copper or brass. You might have encountered a time where you bought a piece of gold jewelry and the gold rubbed off very quickly, and turned you green. The reason people like to purchase gold plated jewelry is because it is inexpensive, easy to make, and widely available.
Gold Vermeil:
Vermeil is made with precious materials for long lasting wear. A thick layer (2.5 microns) of gold is deposited onto a sterling silver base. Gold Vermeil is hypoallergenic as the base metal is a precious metal. This is perfect for those with sensitivities and why it is our preferred method.
In Canada, the legal requirements for labelling jewelry "gold vermeil" is only 1 microns of gold. Jewelry by Amanda uses the American Standard minimum of 2.5 microns for quality and longevity. We prefer to use this method as we can create and design a much wider range of jewelry than gold-filled allows us.
Gold Filled:
Gold filled jewelry is a process where gold is pressure bonded to brass. The result of this process ensures the gold lasts a long time, without the hefty price tag of solid gold. We use gold filling for our thicker layering chains. Gold fill is good for both quality and value.
